From Wikipedia:

Sportsmanship is conformance to the rules, spirit, and etiquette of sport. More grandly, it may be considered the ethos of sport. It is interesting that the motivation for sport is often an elusive element. Sportsmanship expresses an aspiration or ethos that the activity will be enjoyed for its own sake, with proper consideration for fairness, ethics, respect, and a sense of fellowship with one’s competitors. Being a “good sport” involves being a “good winner” as well as being a “good loser”.

While I don’t disagree with any of the points in this paragraph, the definition is, as a whole, unsatisfying. Yes, sportsmanship may be considered the ethos of sport, but what is the essence that ethos? Yes, the principles of fairness, ethics, respect and fellowship are present, but what underpins them all? None of the other definitions I could find online provided any better satisfaction.

I wish to develop a concise, yet complete, definition of “sportsmanship”. The initial phrase that comes to my mind is “the compartmentalization of aggression” which captures some of what I wish to convey, but it perhaps is not self-explanatory.

Anyway, this is something that I will explore and develop.
